Gyoza, pan-fried dumplings, are considered a staple Japanese soul food. Though the dish has roots in China, Japanese gyoza culture has been changing significantly ever since. If you’ve come to Shinjuku for a visit, then gyoza is a dish that you should definitely try, as you can find many different kinds of gyoza in the city. In this article, we will be focusing on Tairiku, a gyoza restaurant in the Kabukicho area of Shinjuku.
How to Get There
When you exit Shinjuku Station, make your way to Yasukuni-dori Street and head towards Yotsuya. Pass Don Quijote, and you can find Tairiku on the 4th floor of the building on the next intersection. Take the elevator up and you’ll be greeted by the welcoming staff. The interior is bright and clean with 90 seats available, including counter seats and tables for up to four people. The menu includes many different dishes, including traditional Chinese ones.
History of Tairiku
Gyoza Shop Tairiku was founded in 1953. After losing World War II, the troops that withdrew from China still remembered the gyoza that they had eaten during their time there. After consulting with chefs who made the dish, the flavor was arranged to suit the Japanese pallet and with that, Tairiku’s Gyoza were created. One unique point is that these gyoza do not include garlic! If you’re not a fan, you don’t need to worry. The light ginger taste is what has garnered this dish so many fans.
Try Different Types of Gyoza
Tairiku offers not only fried gyoza but boiled gyoza and steamed gyoza as well. The boiled gyoza are not too big and feature a perfect balance of filling and specially made dough that is chewy and delicious. The filling is a simple mix of pork and vegetables, and they taste great even without any condiments. The light flavoring is countered by the juicy pork with a rich umami flavor. The filling of the steamed gyoza has a light shrimp taste. The dough used is the same as the fried gyoza and boiled gyoza, however, the steamed gyoza are chewier. Eat them straight from the bamboo steamer for the best taste!
The gyoza at Tairiku don’t use any garlic, so even those who have strong food preferences can enjoy them. While fried gyoza are typical in Japan, steamed gyoza and boiled gyoza are also available at this restaurant. Try delicious and authentic Chinese cooking at Tairiku!
