Toraya Café An Stand is a Great Place to Try Red Bean Paste for the First Time!
Feb 06, 2019
An (red azuki bean paste) is an ingredient that is often included in Japanese sweets. However, the texture and sweetness is something that many people from western countries are not used to. Toraya Café An Stand in Shinjuku is a great place to try an for the first time!
Let's Go to Toraya Café An Stand
The Shinjuku branch of Toraya Café An Stand opened in 2016. The stand was created with the idea of “having an as part of your daily life”. In order to have people enjoy an as much as possible, there are a large variety of sweets that include the red bean paste.
Sophisticated Design to Match the Treats
The lightly-colored interior was designed by Landscape Products. The use of wooden materials and the large glass windows give the shop a sense of calm, and there is a small café space where you can take a break while eating your treats. The round tables and stools exclusively designed for this shop add to the relaxing vibe, and the walnut-colored flooring an especially unique touch. Tora means tiger in Japanese, so the interior is decorated with tiger tile art from graphic designer Masayoshi Nakajo. This artwork helps add to the welcoming atmosphere of the space.
Try the Exclusive An Koppe (432 yen including tax)!
Koppepan is a Japanese snack that is coupé bread (similar to a hot dog bun) with sweet filling. Toraya Café’s An Koppe is exclusive to the Shinjuku An Stand. Though comparatively small for a koppepan, it is filled with puréed an paste and cream cheese. This dessert was overseen by renowned café Le Petit Mec, and as such the balance between the bread and an paste is fantastic. You can also get this tasty treat to go!
Japan is renowned for its cuisine, and sweets are a part that cannot be overlooked. Get an “only in Japan” treat during your visit to Shinjuku!
