Bubble tea (also known as boba, tapioca tea or pearl milk tea) is a drink that originated in Taiwan. Thanks to authentic Taiwanese bubble tea shops popping up in Tokyo, it is quickly gaining popularity here as well! For those who don’t know, bubble tea is flavored milk tea with large pearls of tapioca in it. In this article, we will introduce you to six authentic bubble tea shops that are all near Shinjuku Station.

CoCo

CoCo is one of the oldest Taiwanese chains and has over 2,000 shops worldwide. It’s also very popular in Japan as well. They offer a wide selection of drinks, with 49 flavors to choose from. Their line-up includes bubble tea as well as green tea with fermented milk, a drink that is popular in Taiwan.

Gong Cha

The entrance to Gong Cha, a popular Taiwanese tea café, is located outside of the Odakyu Halc Department Store and there is usually a line-up waiting outside!



The drink base is high-quality Taiwanese tea, and you can select the sweetness, amount of ice and what toppings you would like. It’s also reasonably priced, which contributes to its popularity. They also offer seasonal drinks, so stop by regularly to try all of the different flavors!

Chun Shui Tang is said to be the Taiwanese café that created bubble tea. They have many shops in Japan, and the Shinjuku location is directly accessible from the station.
