This Seventy Year Old Shinjuku Coffee Shop Has Everything a Coffee Lover Could Want!

Feb 11, 2019

Only three minutes away from the East Exit of Shinjuku Station is Yamamoto Coffee, a specialty store a block away from the busy Shinjuku-dori Street. You can spot this shop thanks to its orange banner and welcoming scent of coffee coming from inside. They have everything a coffee lover could ask for, including roasted and unroasted beans, grinders, roasters, cups, saucers and other coffee-related accessories.

The History of Yamamoto Coffee

Yamamoto Coffee has a 70 year history, according to the friendly shop owner Mr. Yamamoto. “At first we sold tea and seaweed, but everything – the seaweed, the tea, the coffee beans – was very sensitive to the humidity. The way to store the items was the same, but as we wanted to prioritize the fragrance, we have been selling coffee beans for the past 70 years.” Mr. Yamamoto explained.

Let's See What's Inside!

As there is a huge selection of coffee beans at very reasonable prices, many people stop by including regular customers who come to pick up home-roasted coffee beans, people from overseas who are involved in the world of coffee and tourists who love coffee.

The most popular item in the shop is the German Blend. The bitterness of the blend tastes great black, with milk or with any other additions. Mr. Yamamoto’s recommendation is the Toraya blend, an Indonesian coffee that has a pleasant aroma and a light taste with a hint of bitterness. They also offer the popular Blue Mountain coffee and high-quality coffee beans from many different countries, both roasted and unroasted.

Of course, they have not only beans, but coffee accessories as well, including many pour-over coffee accessories, as pour-over coffee is a brewing method that has become popular with coffee aficianados all over the world.

Not Only Coffee, but Tea Too!

There is also a selection of teas and herb teas available. If you are in the Shinjuku area for sightseeing, Yamamoto Coffee is a great place to stop by. Pick up some coffee beans or tea and enjoy it in your own home!
