Refresh Your Body and Mind! Where to Unwind on Your Shinjuku Trip

Mar 11, 2019

If you take a trip to Shinjuku, you need to know that there’s more than skyscrapers and the nightlife in Kabukicho! In this article, we will introduce you to spots where you can take a breather and refresh your body and mind.

Makanai Cosme, a Shop that Sells Cosmetics that are Gentle on Your Skin

First up is the cosmetics shop Makanai Cosme. The founding company, Yoshitaka Kinpaku Hompo, was started in 1899 (Meiji Year 32) in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. Thankfully, you don’t need to go all the way to Ishikawa to get these gentle cosmetics – the conveniently located Shinjuku branch is on Mosaic Street, close to the West Exit of Shinjuku Station.

Makanai Cosme is well known for their kinpaku (gold leaf) cream, which was created by women who worked in hot and dry factories. They were worried about their skin, so they took Japanese ingredients (konnyaku jelly, washi paper, rice bran, silk, soy beans, brown sugar and gold leaf, and made a cream by hand that is all natural and gentle on the skin. If you’re into natural skin care, then this is a shop that you must check out!

Try Dou Hua, a Healthy Taiwanese Dessert!

Next up is a café on the restaurant floor of the Mylord Department Store, Sao Dou Hua, that opened in the summer of 2018. This is the first location of the Taiwanese Sweets Café in Japan, and there is a line-up to get in even on the weekdays. Here, you can try dou hua, a tofu jelly dessert.

Of all of the dou hua available, the Fruit Dou Hua topped with mango and watermelon is especially popular! You must try this dessert that is both delicious and good for you!
