Jun 20, 2018

Certified by "Guinness World Records" as the world’s busiest station, Shinjuku Station is equipped with many lockers both inside and outside the ticket gates. Even so, it may be difficult to find an empty locker so knowing the "secret" locker spots can make your travels much easier.

The battle for a locker near the ticket gates can get fierce. And despite the large number of lockers, it can be especially difficult to find one large enough to fit a suitcase. Here we take a look at some lesser-known locations with lockers and baggage storage services.

(1) Underneath the West Exit Plaza: Near the Shinjuku Station West Parking Area Entrance

Located under the West Exit Plaza close to Shinjuku Station's West Exit, this area is highly recommended because it usually has a lot of empty lockers. To find it, look for a "Shinjuku Station West Parking Area Entrance" sign and go down the stairs when you get to them.

A quiet locker area with this much lighting is a rare find. The lockers come in various sizes and payment is accepted in cash and e-money. While you may find it laborious to haul heavy baggage up and down the stairs, the spacious area, the large number of available lockers and the relaxed atmosphere are well worth the trouble.

(2) West Exit Plaza: Animal Lockers

Have you ever left your baggage somewhere only to forget where the locker was when you went to retrieve your belongings? These lockers in the West Exit Plaza solve that dilemma with lovable animal designs. This location is also recommended for its large number of usually empty lockers.

These lockers are older, so they only take coins, but once you pick the locker with your favorite animal picture on it, you’ll never forget which one is yours.

(3) Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center (Shinjuku West)

The Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center (Shinjuku West) is located right outside the West Exit ticket gate at Odakyu Shinjuku Station and has a baggage storage counter. They will hold suitcases, gifts and other baggage for the day. They will even hold large pieces of baggage that don’t fit in lockers!

At800 yen per item, this service also allows you to take things out of and put things into your luggage as many times as you want during the day. The center also provides same-day courier service in the Kanto area, including hotels and airports.
