Enjoy Shinjuku’s Nightlife at 8bitcafe, a Bar for Those Who Love Gaming Culture!

Oct 04, 2018

If you want to have fun late at night in Shinjuku, Golden Gai, an area where many unique bars are located, is often mentioned. However, another option is also 8bitcafe, a bar on the 5th floor of a multi-tenant building only a second away from the C5 Exit of Shinjuku Sanchome Station. It’s the perfect place for those who love the gaming subculture of the 80s and 90s.

Welcome to the 8bitcafe!

When you enter the bar, you’re welcomed into this mysterious space by a shimmering disco ball and a giant Game Boy.

Sit wherever you like, and the staff will hand you 8bitcafe's menu and “Instruction Manual”.

The instructions are:
- There is a 500 yen cover charge per person
- Order at least one drink every one-and-a-half hours
- It’s OK to take photos, but don’t disturb those around you
- Please do not sleep

Relive Your Childhood with their Awesome Collection of Memorablia

8bitcafe has Nintendo consoles from the 80s, a huge collection of manga, action figures, toys, and a ton of game controllers! What they have gathered in their bar will take you back to your childhood.

You can also see some things that are explicitly 80s. For example, cute coasters made of ironed beads, records of BOØWY, a Japanese band popular in the 80s, and a Flipper’s Guitar poster that is sure to be a hit with those who love Shibuya-kei music, a style of “city pop”.

They even have retro game tables, something that is rarely seen these days (especially ones that are working!). You’re sure to feel as if you have gone back in time!

Try the Creative Food and Drinks

You may be distracted by all of the fun goods decorating the bar, however the food and drinks also stand out. The bar offers delicious original cocktails with names like Dr. Mario, Princess Peach’s Temptation and A One Day Outing Ticket for 500,000 Perica (a reference to the manga Kaiji).

8bitcafe is not only for those who love gaming culture, but many tourists from outside of Japan stop by as well. Thus, there is an English version of their large menu available.

They don’t just offer cocktails - you can eat a full meal here as well.

This time we ordered a dish that has been popular since the restaurant was opened – the Tomato and Infinite 1UP Mushroom Two-Colored Pasta and the colorful Piko Piko French Fries made with Various Potatoes. Both were very delicious!

The "Half-Killed Cucumbers" topped with original dressing are perfect for when you want a snack! The music at 8bitcafe ranges from game music to techno to idol music from the Showa Era. You’re sure to enjoy your meal while talking about the generation that has since passed.

Chill Out with Your Favorite Games

You can relax in this space by playing retro video games and chatting with the friendly staff and manager about gaming culture. Of course, you can also eat and drink as much as you like! This is a great place to spend an unforgettable night in Tokyo – stop by and check it out!
