Coffee L’Ambre – Shinjuku’s Hidden Coffee Shop

Mar 25, 2019

In the hustle and bustle of the busy Shinjuku district is Coffee L’Ambre, a calm coffee shop where you can have a few moments of peace and quiet. This coffee shop that was founded over 60 years ago is not only a café, but has also been designated as a historical cultural property of Shinjuku Ward.

Let's Visit Coffee L'Ambre!

The first floor of Coffee L’Ambre is for smokers, whereas the spacious concert hall-like basement is entirely non-smoking.

The red sofas and large chandelier are well-used and bring out the retro atmosphere of this café. In an era when people didn’t have the means to listen to music in their own homes, people would gather at coffee shops like this one to listen to classical music. In Japanese, these cafés are called “meikyoku kissa” (famous song cafés).

Order Some Delicious Coffee and Treats!

The menu features a wide variety of drinks and desserts, including blended coffee, black tea, cocoa, parfaits, coffee jelly and more. There are also large selection of dishes available, such as spaghetti in Bolognese sauce, pizza toast, egg sandwiches and “dry” curry (curry flavored rice).

Take a Break This Classic Café!

This coffee shop is located only five minutes from the East Exit of Shinjuku Station. Keep an eye out for the brilliant golden sign. When you’re tired from walking around Shinjuku, be sure to stop by!
