Catch a Bus or Train from Shinjuku Station and Take a Day Trip!

Oct 27, 2020

During your trip to Japan, it’s a given that you’ll want to see as much of the country as possible. Some of you may even be considering taking a day trip to an area outside of Tokyo. As Shinjuku is one of Tokyo’s major transportation hubs, it’s the perfect place to catch a train to a surrounding tourist destination. Catch the Odakyu Limited Express Romancecar or a Highway Bus from Shinjuku and explore the areas surrounding Tokyo!

Enoshima-Kamakura Area

About an hour from Shinjuku by train is the Enoshima-Kamakura area. Kamakura is the former capital of Japan, whereas Enoshima has more of a resort flavor. You can spend the entire day in this area trying out the local food, admiring the scenery, and feeling the sea breeze as you walk along the coastline. Enoshima is an island that is a well-known tourist location in Japan, with popular spots such as Enoshima Shrine and the Enoshima Aquarium in the area. It's also home to the Enoshima Sea Candle, a tower that symbolizes the area. You can see Mount Fuji, the Izu Peninsula, and Hakone from the building's observation deck.

Kamakura is a town surrounded by Sagami Bay on one side and mountains on the other three. This unique landscape is home to Tsuruoka Hachimangu Shrine and the Great Buddha of Kamakura, as well as many other shrines and temples, making it a favorite of those who want to experience Japan’s traditional culture and history. It is also known for its natural seasonal beauty, marked by cherry blossoms in the spring, hydrangeas in the early summer, and red and orange leaves in the fall. There are many spots to take in a meal as well, from traditional restaurants to trendy cafés.

If you visit the Enoshima-Kamakura area, then we recommend picking up the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass. With the Freepass, you’ll get a discounted entrance fee to certain locations in the area or a free souvenir. The pass also includes a round-trip ticket to and from Shinjuku, as well as as many trips as you like on the Odakyu Line (from Fujisawa to Katase-Enoshima) and the entire Enoden Line (from Fujisawa to Kamakura.) With the Freepass, you can explore the area without any hassle.

Hakone

Hakone, a popular hot spring resort town, is 80-minutes away from Shinjuku on the Odakyu Limited Express Romancecar. Although many choose to spend two days and one night in the area, it’s also an excellent choice for a day trip. Known as one of the regions located near the base of Mount Fuji, the health benefits of the hot springs in the area have been touted since the Edo Period (1603-1867.) Since then, it has steadily gained popularity to become one of Japan’s top hot spring resort towns. It has recently become popular among visitors from overseas as well.

Hakone has many wonderful hot springs, beautiful scenery, and many spots where you can get an excellent view of Mount Fuji. We recommend seeing the famous mountain from Lake Ashi, while traveling through the sky on the Hakone Ropeway or while relaxing in an outdoor bath. Hakone is beautiful at any time of year and is home to many museums as well. No matter when you go, Hakone is a place that you can enjoy to the fullest year-round.

Gotemba

Gotemba is located in Shizuoka Prefecture at the base of Mount Fuji, Japan’s symbolic mountain. You can get to Gotemba via the Odakyu Limited Express Romancecar or by taking a Highway Bus directly to the town. You can see the World Heritage Site Mount Fuji right before your very eyes as you enjoy outlet shopping!

Gotemba is best known for the Gotema Premium Outlets. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the outlet, and to commemorate the occasion, a new area known as Hill Side opened on June 1st, 2020, joining the beloved West Zone and East Zone. There are 290 shops in this outlet mall, which is the largest in Japan. Enjoy an excellent view of Mount Fuji as you shop, eat delicious food, and go on rides in the mini amusement park. Gotemba Premium Outlet is an ideal spot to enjoy your time with your family or a group. This area is beautiful at any time of year, so if you’re in the mood for shopping, then Gotemba is the place to go!

Shinjuku Station is an excellent place to take a train or bus and escape the big city's hustle and bustle. During your trip to Tokyo, make time to explore outside of the capital to get a sense of what the entire country has to offer. Even if you don't have time to make it across the country, a day trip to a neighboring prefecture is an excellent idea!
