Although Shinjuku is well-known for being a busy business district, there are also a lot of book stores as well. From large bookstores to independently-own ones, if you love books the why not stop by the following shops the next time you are in Shinjuku?

Kinokuniya Book’s Shinjuku Flagship Store, a Massive Bookstore with a Long History

Kinokuniya is a bookstore that has branches overseas, though the flagship store is located right here in Shinjuku. This beloved bookstore opened its doors in Showa Year 2 (1927), and has been a place that delivers culture, arts and information ever since. You can find books from almost every genre here, so if you love books then this shop is a must-visit. It’s connected to the station underground via the Metro Promenade, so you can visit here on a rainy day and make it back to the station without your purchases getting wet. It's also worth noting that the Shinjuku Flagship Store was designated as a Tokyo Historical Architectural Property in Heisei Year 28 (2016).

Book 1st Shinjuku, Located Right Underneath Cocoon Tower

Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower is an eye-catching building that is only a three minute walk from JR Shinjuku Station’s West Exit. Hidden on the B1 and B2 levels is Book 1st Shinjuku!



This is the largest bookstore in West Shinjuku, with 1,000 tsubo (1 tsubo = approx. 3.31 square meters) of space. There is a wide-variety of books, so you are sure to find what you are looking for.

Mosakusha, a One-of-a-kind Bookstore

A 10-minute walk from Shinjuku Station, located around the corner close to the entrance of Shinjuku Gyoen, there is a small door of what looks like a house. Established in 1970, Mosakusha is a small bookstore where books and magazines that cover controversial topics sold. Topics include LGBT, Right Wing ideology and war.

According to its website, they think it is important to preserve diversity of expression. They also believe that it is essential to preserve diversity in media and the publishing industry. Therefore, in this bookstore, you can find books that you don’t often find in the usual bookstores that you might drop by.

The space between bookshelves is very narrow, but you still have space to browse despite the newspapers and magazines piled up on the floors. You will truly find another world upon opening the small door.
