Autumn is reading season!Shinjuku’s Top 3 Bookstores

Nov 05, 2021

Last month we introduced “Sports no aki” which is often translated as “fall is the best season for sports”, but in Japanese there are a plethora of sayings that go “fall is the best season for _______”. Today we’d like to introduce “dokusho no aki” or “fall is the best season for reading”!

In Japan autumn days come with comfortable temperatures that make it the “best season” for relaxing with a good book. With the humid summer heat fading away, sitting and concentrating becomes easier and more enjoyable. Shinjuku has many large bookstores with large sections of books in English that can be impossible to find in other bookstores. If you are looking for a specific book or just browsing check out these 3 stores!

STORY STORY

Directly accessible from Shinjuku Station West Exit, on the 10th floor of Odakyu Department Store is a combination bookstore and café called 「STORY STORY」. Built around the concept of being the “Editor of your space” you can design your lifestyle with carefully selected books and goods organized by concept, such as food and living, or a children’s section with educational toys and picture books. If you are a Marvel, Star Wars or Winnie the Pooh fan there are specialized displays with books and goods for each that you need to check out!

The in-store café’s expansive windows have amazing views of Shinjuku’s skyscrapers and busy streets. The menu has items inspired by novels and picture books and cutely designed sweets that are popular online. There are also special limited time collaboration events with books, movies or characters.
