See Amazingly Detailed Blackboard Art in Shinjuku!

The Shinjuku Creators Festa may be over, but you still have a chance to see some of the art made for the event until October 31st!

The Shinjuku Creators Festa, an event featuring art exhibits from professionals, students, children as well as outdoor art ran this year from August 1st until October 8th, 2018. The works from many different creators were displayed, as this event aims to provide a place for artists to showcase their work.

In the student art category, students from Saitama Omiya Koryo High School were invited to do a live blackboard art drawing in Shinjuku, as they won the Blackboard Art Tournament held by blackboard maker Nichigaku. This is the second time that the tournament winners have been invited to participate in the Shinjuku Creators Festa. Last year, the winners held a live drawing event on the first floor of JR Shinjuku Station near the East Exit. The work attracted a lot of positive attention, so this year the live drawing event was held at Kinokuniya’s Shinjuku Flagship Store.

The art created during the live drawing will be on display in Kinokuniya’s main building’s show window on the landing between the first and second floor, on the staircase closest to the Ad Hoc building. You also have a chance to buy a coffee table book featuring blackboard art that was submitted to the tournament.

These high school-aged artists put a lot of effort into their work. The key that helped them win the tournament was the idea to mix the chalk with water. The work they created for the live drawing event incorporates the same technique, so take the time to admire the work up-close and marvel at these young artists’ ingenuity!
